SUMMARY:EEG-guided TMS:  the State of the Evidence

Leuchter\, MD\nTreatments for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) act at different hierarchical levels of biological complexity\, ranging from the individual synapse to the brain as a whole. Evidence suggests that modulation of synchronized electrical activity in brain networks may integrate these different levels of complexity\, and may be central to the mechanism of action of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS). Several lines of research indicate that electroencephalogram (EEG) recording during rTMS can help elucidate the mechanism of action of rTMS treatment. There is emerging evidence that EEG also may be useful in guiding selection of EEG treatment parameters. Leuchter\, MD \nAndrew F. Leuchter\, MD\, is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Neuromodulation Division at UCLA. An expert on the treatment of mood disorders\, Dr. Leuchter directs the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Clinical and Research Service. This is one of the largest academic TMS program in the country and treats patients with depression\, OCD\, pain\, tinnitus\, and other neuropsychiatric illness. His research aims to develop novel treatment strategies and predict which treatments are most likely to benefit individual patients.​ \nDr. Leuchter has authored over 200 scientific articles on topics including neuromodulation for the treatment of depression\, EEG biomarkers to guide treatment of neuropsychiatric illness\, and theories of antidepressant action.
